Because if your suggestions are only hurtful, then you're really doing more bad than good. Be careful when you educate your fellow artists. We should help each other, not harm each other.

But really, think about it.
Would you listen to advice coming from someone who was being harsh? Most likely not. So be nice or shut the fuck up.

Agreed! Although, personally, I know from art school that I eventually will listen to harsh advice, it just takes longer to sink it. It's like I have to get past the hurt and embarrassment before I can see the truth in their critique. If someone gave me advice in a friendly tone, I might take it to heart immediately. If they were a dick about it, I might not attempt using their advice for weeks or even months afterwards.

I believe it's important for artists to have a thick skin because not everyone is going to sugarcoat things, but I don't think it's necessary to be needlessly cruel. Blunt and rude don't have to be the same thing. It's possible to give a straight-forward critique without insults. I know because I had great professors who did just that.

While I do support intense (and maybe even a LITTLE harsh) criticism, I don't appreciate it when they start insulting the author rather than caustically criticizing the work (I'm a fanfic author if you're wondering why I'm talking about writing). Also, if they have nothing positive to say about the work, then they should explain WHY they thought it sucked, so that us artists/authors/etc. can make our future masterpieces NOT suck. This goes for EVERY kind of artist.

I remember when someone gave me some really harsh 'critique' , ok, they did mention a couple of good things but the negative side really upset me and I lost confidence for a little while

However I do love constructive critique, it really does help and I fully appreciate it ^^

It's pretty sad how people don't offer constructive criticism when you really want it, yet they'll go right at it and insult the bejesus out of you for no good reason at all. People need to know the difference between constructive and deconstructive criticism, or at least get their cranuims checked.

Yeah. If someone makes a negative comment on my art, they should also specify what's wrong with it and what I can do to improve it. Otherwise, it's just an insult.

I feel like every comment on my art ever is an insult because I have low self esteem.
